On October 1, 1927, the University of Michigan Wolverines football team played their first game in here against Ohio Wesleyan, 33-0. The first dedication game in The Big House was on October 22, 1927 with the University of Michigan Wolverines football team defeated the Ohio State with 21-0. The University of Michigan Wolverines football team holds both the NCAA regular season single game and season attendance marks. For the past 22 seasons the University of Michigan Wolverines football team has led the nation in season attendance.

The University of Michigan Wolverines has a rivalry with the Ohio State buckeyes. According to the American sports, the competition between the University of Michigan Wolverines and Ohio State buckeyes was considered the fiercest among all. In 2000 and 2003 ESPN’s fan poll, the University of Michigan Wolverines-Ohio buckeyes State series was voted as the greatest rivalry in sports.

In addition to this, University of Michigan Wolverines has a rivalry with the University of Notre Dame. Football was first introduced at Notre Dame in 1879 by the members of the University of Michigan Wolverines football team. The University of Michigan Wolverines football team taught the game to a group of Notre Dame students. This incident gave birth to a football program in Notre Dame. The University of Michigan Wolverines game traditionally takes place early in the season and both of these schools are playing competitively in football.
